| Benighted Soul's biography |
Benighted Soul is a french lyric
metal band created in 2003.
The concept of the band is based on the combination of a lyric voice and a metal
music and particularly on the contrast that comes from the confrontation of
these two musical environments.
In this style, nowadays represented by many bands, Benighted Soul succeeded in
distinguishing from the rest and found its own path, its originality.
The lyrics, mostly inspired by Greek and Egytpian myths, give to the songs an
epic and exotic atmosphere that now defines Benighted Soul's music.
Benighted Soul : the Genesis.
The band is born from the will of Géraldine Gadaut, lyric singer, to
evolve at the same time as her classic formation in a metal band which would
allow her to express all her talent.
So she creates Benighted Soul with the keyboarder Yann Pacaud, who gives
the band its first compositions.
Around them, they gather Jérémie Heyms, guitar player, and
Jean-Gabriel Bocciarelli, bass player, with very different influences from
the other members (Metallica, Pantera, Gojira, SOAD...). Both will also compose
tracks, giving more aggressiveness to the music.
Benighted Soul takes more time to find the one who would play the drums. But
Eric Palumbo takes over from Yohann Kostrzewa in November of 2004 and
soon seems to be the one who was missing to the band to blossom.
First successes.
The band plays at the fête de la musique in 2003 and to everyone's surprise the
public is totally enthousiastic. With this experience, Benighted Soul focuses on
completing its list of songs in the perspective of recording a first demo.
Meanwhile, the band keeps playing gigs, especially for charity manifestations (ELA,
Metz Queuleu lock-up, Téléthon...).
Finally, during summer 2004, they begin recording the demo and
Enchantment is released in september. To
promote this first CD, BS plays in Nancy during a gig supported by "l'Est
Républicain" and participates to regional radios like Fajet.
The band reaches new horizons : it participates to their first big concert ; the
Perennial Fest II in Epinal. The challenge is tough : they must conquer
the heart of a extreme metal public, not really fond of symphonic metal. But
Benighted Soul succeeds in warming up the audience, for the arrival of Aborted
and Imperial Sodomu. A DVD of this performance as been realized by TDK
PRODS and is available on the website.
The band has evolved a lot, musically speaking, and decides to record a new demo
: Catharsis ("Purification by art"). This CD
announces a new turning in the band's story : more aggressiveness in the music
and lyrics inspired by Greek myths.
And Benighted Soul rises again from its ashes...
In February of 2006, Eric Palumbo decides to leave the line-up. The band
begins to search for a new drummer but in 2006, the 5th of March, Benighted Soul
looses its foundator and keyboarder, Yann Pacaud, in a tragic car
accident. The members are of course overwhelmed by the loss of a musician that
was above all their friend. But very rapidly they become aware that they must go
on, for themselves but also in memory of Yann, because he loved this project and
strongly believed in it. After hard moments to face, Benighted Soul comes back
on June 17th for a Ultim'atome gig in Blamont with Recueil Morbide, and on July
8th for a parisian concert organised by Elianor and Angelsymphony, with Wildpath,
Oniromancy, Polaris...
Benighted Soul rises again from its ashes : new website, new logo, new line-up.
Nicolas Adam now plays the drums and Flavien Morel plays the keyboard parts. The band can now start again and keep on
taking up the place that it holds on the french metal scene.
To learn more about the band don't hesitate to read interviews in the press section. |
